PRACTICAL TACTICAL: FESTIVAL THEMES 2

April 13, 2023

Changing how we do things is essential when faced with the climate emergency, financial crisis and social division. That's why The Green Gathering is about so much more than partying in a field - alongside the music and magic there’s a deep desire for better, kinder ways of organising our world.

At the festival you’ll find campaigners, speakers, engineers, craftsfolk and veteran protesters sharing the practical skills and factual knowledge needed to build resilience and foster rebellion… all sandwiched between entertainment and relaxation venues.

When we step out of the mainstream and wind down in a safe and beautiful space, barriers drop away, minds and hearts open. We invite you to listen to reason and passion, to discover the truth behind clickbait media stories, to care and to act.

Take a tour around the festival: along the main track, into the Campaigns Field to discover a wealth of knowledge and practical skill sharing at the Speakers’ Forum, Resource Hub and workshop tents; then drop down to the Craft island and put your hands to work.

Around the Campaigns Field…

Campaigns is the centre of politics and protest at the Gathering, bringing together activists and community groups. Hear stories from protest camps and traveller sites, cooperatives and women’s groups, queer collectives and refugee solidarity organisations… and find out how to get involved or support their work.

There's chance to get involved at the Clean Stream waste processing centre or to cook up vegan delicacies in the Food For A Future tent.

…to the Resource Hub…

You can’t miss the solar fire engine, and right next door is a hangout for renewable energy experts where you’ll discover how to wire up a solar panel, look after storage batteries, and tell the time using a giant sundial.

…to the Speakers’ Forum…

The Forum provides a platform for radical thinkers, clued-up academics and inspired orators – it’s a place to learn, enjoy a debate, and get fired up to take action. In the evenings, the Forum turns into the Radical Cinema with Reel News, hosting documentaries and films each night of the festival.

…to the Craft Island…

Here you can learn traditional skills from creative makers specialising in heritage crafts, and equip yourself with the tools and know-how for truly sustainable living. Create beautiful, useful objects with your own hands, using natural and upcycled materials. Find joy in fixing and mending. Reject consumerist throwaway culture.

…and Windcraft's Greek Windmill

See wind directly powering carpentry tools or grinding wheat to make flour... and hear all about Britain's 'lowest carbon loaf'!

“We’ve all got to get involved now – in the local Green Party, Just Stop Oil, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, caring for local footpaths… putting back in to the community in whatever way we can” Shane Collins, Green Gathering director

The Green Gathering is a festival beyond hedonism, where we can dance the night away then wake up and work out how to change the world alongside new friends. If you’re not sure where to put your energy to make a difference, take the tour from the Campaigns Field to Craft Island this summer.

Be inspired, and help make the festival’s impact last far longer than a weekend
